Study in Lithuania

Lithuania offers excellent academic institutions, innovative facilities and more than 350 English-taught study programs for international students. The country is valuing education as the literacy among young Lithuanians above 15 years old is 100%.

In Lithuania you can study in English full-time or part-time. You can prove your English language proficiency through a TOEFL language test. The degrees are offered in three cycles: The undergraduate Bachelor’s cycle, the graduate Master’s cycle and the postgraduate Doctorate cycle. A number of Lithuanian universities like Vilnius University and Vytautas Magnus University are included among the top universities in the world.

In Lithuania you can find 15 public universities and 6 private as well as 16 public colleges and 11 private ones. The largest university in the country and one of the oldest universities in Northern Europe is Vilnius University.

A language proficiency test is required for international students before applying to any of the universities.

The average score required in TOEFL is 65-105 and the minimum average score accepted in IELTS is 5.5-6.5 in the universities of Lithuania.

The students must prove that they can support themselves financially during their studies in Lithuania.

Students applying to Lithuania Universities have to complete the required forms for the residence permit. Biometrics is also required to be provided at the time of visa application

Tuition fees in Lithuania are considered very affordable for international students. Each institution has their own tuition fee regulations, depending on the study cycle and the discipline. As a result, it is better to contact the university of your choice directly for additional information.

If you choose to study at a public university, then you are expected to pay 1,000-5,300 EUR per year for a Bachelor’s degree, 2,200-6,500 EUR per year for a Master’s degree and 7,000-8,400 EUR per year for a Doctorate degree.

Lithuanian Scholarships

If you are a European citizen you can apply for a state-funded study place and receive a Lithuanian scholarship, meaning that you can study for free! You just need to meet particular requirements. The same applies if you are a non-European student, as governmental agencies and private institutions offer multiple Lithuanian scholarships for international students as well.

European students are exempted from visa requirements while studying in Lithuania. However, if your study program is longer than three months and you would like to stay in the country more, you will need to get a certificate from the Lithuanian Ministry of the Interior.

If you are a non-European citizen, then you are obliged to get a Lithuanian student visa (called Visa D) and also a temporary residence permit. The processing visa time is around two weeks, but it would be good if you apply for the Visa D as soon as possible. A Lithuanian student visa D costs 80 EUR and the residence permit costs around 28 EUR.

Be aware that you will need a valid health insurance while staying in Lithuania as a student. If you are a European national then you need to have the European Health Insurance Card. In case you are a non-European International student, then you can contact one of the insurance companies on Lithuanian Insurers Association (LDA).

• Accept a university place after you receive your acceptance letter and pay any required fees to the university.
• Contact your nearest Lithuanian Embassy or Consulate and book a visa appointment.
• Download, print, complete and sign the visa application form with all the relevant information.
• Before your appointment with the Lithuanian Embassy start gathering all the necessary documents needed for your visa application and also prepare the translation of the documents if needed.
• Attend the visa appointment at the Embassy where you can in person submit your documents and pay the application fee.
• Wait for the Embassy decision and register online for a temporary residence permit through MIGRIS (The Lithuanian Migration Information System).
• Provide any additional documents to the Lithuanian Embassy of your home country. You will be also required to have your biometric data recorded.

Documents for the Lithuanian Student D Visa:

• A completed and signed visa application form.
• Recent passport-sized photos.
• A valid passport.
• The university’s admission letter.
• Proof of sufficient financial resources of at least 150 EUR per month. This can be provided for example through bank statements.
• Details of your student accommodation arrangements and address.
• Your flight itinerary including your return flight.
• Student health insurance.

Documents for the Lithuanian Residence Permit:

• Valid student D visa.
• Valid passport.
• The residence permit application through MIGRIS.
• Passport-size photographs.
• Proof of sufficient financial resources of at least 150 EUR per month.
• A police clearance certificate issued by the police in your home country.
• Student health insurance.

The cost of living in Lithuania is inexpensive and the average international student spends around 300-900 EUR per month.

A survey carried out in 2020 has shown that 56% of the students in Lithuania spend 300-500 EUR per month and also 38% spend only 300 EUR per month. Of course everything depends on the amount you are willing to spend for student accommodation, food and lifestyle.

You can minimize your cost of living in Lithuania if you use student cards for discounts and special offers. These include the Lithuanian Student Identity Card (LSP), International Student Identity Card (ISIC) or Erasmus Student Network card (ESN). You can ask the student services department at your university to find out more.

As for student accommodation in Lithuania, you have the following options: Either stay in a university dormitory or in a shared or private accommodation. The majority of universities assist students in securing housing to reduce the cost of living in Lithuania and offer very affordable accommodation options.

This type of accommodation is very popular so make sure you apply on time! Student dormitories are mostly located on campus and offer renovated and fully equipped facilities to international students. You share your room with other students and you can only enter the facilities with your student ID. Keep in mind that the internet might not be included in the price, so you will have to pay that expense by yourself.

In addition, you can choose to rent your own apartment in the city and live alone or even rent an apartment with some of your classmates so you can reduce the cost of living. However, the cost of renting a house on your own would be much higher than living in the university dormitory. You can find available apartments at Aruodas and Solo Society.

Overall, your expenses in Lithuania would be 90-300 EUR for student accommodation, 150-300 EUR for food and drink, 20-50 EUR for study materials and 100-300 EUR on your activities and interests. Transportation is very expensive as well, around 30 EUR per month, but it can even be cheaper by using your student discount.
